This week, we were recommended to browse two online journal websites, Journal of Artist Research(JAR) and Leonardo, and consider what the differences between them.
The first impression is that I can quickly find my interested topics through the conspicuous navigation, which is appeared on the top of the homepage. In Leonardo, Its layout is more like a catalog of a book so that viewers can read sequentially. As for the content, JAR shows the portfolios of each artistic work, in other words, the articles in JAR show the introduction and process about artists’ artworks. People can understand them in detail. The articles, however, in Leonardo are diverse, such as essays and archives. In addition, there are a lot of digital relevant articles in this website, rather than the limited articles in JAR because it focuses on several fields, like music, dance and architect.
I tried to find some articles which are relevant to my interested area. Following is a project from JAR.
This is an interactive installation named ‘Double Skin/Double Mind’, which was made by an interdisciplinary research group in 2006.
This article introduced which fields this project involve in, how to develop and how to construct, including the hardware and data analyzing. The purpose is to have a better fusion of dance, design and computer.
On the other hand, making this project is for analyzing dancing gesture rather than the public entertainment, so this group set up different modes for different kind of people, from public to professional dancers.
Like I mentioned, JAR’s article can make me learn the projects in detail. I would not like to know how this group analyzed the data and applied to this project, if I just stand in front of the entity. This article, however, includes relevant links which contain detailed descriptions about the techniques they applied.
The second article I found in Leonardo named ‘INTERACTIVE ART: THE ART THAT COMMUNICATES’, following is the link.
This paper gives interactive art the characteristics of autonomous learning of artificial intelligence, and then analyzes the true meaning of human motion in interactive art. The interactive art with intelligent features can recognize the spectators’ requirements.
A test of interaction and data capturing for knowledge discovery provides the answer to the current spectator’s behavior. This enables the spectator to feel in control of the creation of the art itself, and, since it is interactive, the spectator will feel the sensation of the art. In this way, the artist can channel the creativity aspect in interactive art to the spectator and create a more personalized viewing experience.
This article explained what the knowledge discovery and mining data are, and show the notion of them.
The notion of finding useful patterns in data has been termed data mining, knowledge extraction, information discovery, data pattern processing and the like. Amongst these, data mining is the most widely used term representing knowledge discovery.
They also gave an example to indicate that how do the knowledge discovery and data mining were applied in the SwarmArt. These remind me of the second article about algorithms, which contains the characteristic of self-learning and analysis.
