Generative Art - Computer Generated Art

I went to Victoria and Albert Museum(V&A) for watching the exhibition, named Chance and Control: Art in the Age of Computers, and the introduction of it indicate that it aims to celebrate 50 years and more of computer generated art. According to my courses content, I just heard about generative art. So…what is the meaning of computer generated art? What the differences between computer generated art and generative art?

Algorithmic art, also known as computer-generated art, is a subset of generative art (generated by an autonomous system) and is related to systems art (influenced by systems theory).[wikipedia]

Before using the term of generative art in computer field, It already had been used in the music field. <Musical Dice Game>, which was composed by Mozart by a generative music system. To be more specific, generative art is based on one or more rules which was set by the artist. In addition, recursion, programmatic visualization and dynamic narrative are also can be the aspects of computer generative art.

I was also considering what the generative art should include, like the elements in the artworks? According to the <A framework for understanding generative art>, A generative art has four main components, which are entities, processes, environmental interaction, and sensory outcomes:

  1. Entities: Entities are the subjects upon which a generative artwork’s processes act. They maybe real of conceptual, simulated, physical, chemical, biological of mechanical.

  2. Processes: Processes are the mechanisms of change that occur within a generative system.

  3. Environmental interaction: The environ- mental interaction component of our framework describes flows of information between the gen- erative processes and their oper- ating environment.

  4. Sensory outcomes: Outcomes may be artefacts (visual, sonic, musical, literary, sculptural, etc.), including static or time-based forms.

When I looked around the artworks, I was hooked by the seal which was located in the bottom left corner. The entities, like the seal and bold black stroke, are relevant to Chinese traditional cultures.

In his serials work Pathway, he used a network, which includes multi-pen plotter, and used a paint brush to draw on the paper. The part of procedures represents the drawing techniques in medieval. He wanted to create his art work by combining traditional artist’s materials with computing procedures. In additional, as for a generative artist, the most important part is the code part, which includes creativity side of his work. They also be seen as visual representations of code which integrated into current culture.
